DIY: Install A Ceiling Fan Yourself
Do you have a room that could use a ceiling fan to cool it down? Setting up a ceiling fan is as simple as replacing your current light fixture. Because a ceiling fan requires the same electrical wiring as your light fixture, the only primary thing that needs to be done is to transfer the work box that can handle the weight of the ceiling fan. It could be very dangerous if you do not exchange your current work box to something that can handle the extra weight of the ceiling fan. Before you begin your project, go through the directions for the fan you have bought, and make certain that you have all of the essential tools.
If you're going to put in the fan at a cathedral type ceiling, you might need to have parts to prolong the fan lower. Any time you are ready to set up the fan, ensure that the circuit breaker is shut off so you wont get electrocuted. Take out the light fixture, and determine if the work box that is already there can take on the added weight. Generally they aren't created for a ceiling fan, so you will need to add more more support. Incorporating support to the work box is not that tough if you have admittance to the light fixture from the attic. Check out this fantastic interior design blog.
To increase support, you merely nail a 2x4 in between the ceiling rafters so that it touches the top of the work box. Make sure the 2x4 is anchored in its place, and then screw the box to the wood. If you did it correctly, the body weight of the fan really should be well supported by the 2x4 wood and screws. If you dont have entry to the attic, you will have to place a cross bracing in your ceiling. Doing this is much more of a challenge and may not be as reliable as using a 2x4 but it is the greatest you can do if you dont have access to the attic.
After you have gathered the fan carefully, you are now in a position to hang your fan. The challenging part is hooking up the wiring while holding the fan. Based on the fan, many come with a hanging frame, and others have a bracket with a J hook that lets you hold the motor housing. For most fans the wall switch will turn the device on or off, as the chain will control the speeds. Wiring the fan is as easy as connecting two black wires, two ground wires as well as white wires. Now all you want to do is finish assembling the fan according to the directions, by attaching the fan blades. Once that is done, turn the breaker back on to see the results.
