What kind of information forensic anthropologists can take from skeletons
Forensic anthropology goes hand in hand with crime scene investigation; basically speaking, it is the physical study of humans applied in a legal context. A forensic anthropologist is needed when the body is in an advanced state of decomposition, or when it has suffered some sort of damage that makes information much harder to obtain; he is also useful for his professional testimony in the court of law. This line of work has a lot to do with osteology (the study of bones) - bones are much tougher than the rest of the body, and they also yield much information. Crime scene investigation has had a lot to benefit from forensic anthropology, especially in difficult cases
For example, the first thing that should be done is determining the sex; and this is quite easy. What you need to look as is the skull and the hip bones. Males usually have a more prominent brow ridge, eyesockets, and jaw; but perhaps much more relevant than this is the fact that a woman's hips are much wider than a man's, for the purpose of child bearing. After the gender is determined, height the next easiest thing to do. All you have to do is measure the length of some significant bones and then add 10-12 cm as a substitute for any muscle or tissue that is missing. After this, things get tricky.
Estimating the age can be easy, if working with a child aged 13 and younger, because the wrist development is an excellent indicator. The lower bone plate and the radius fuse together at 17 in males and 20 in females, and at 28 years old, the collarbone is the last bone in the body that stops growing. After 28 years, it becomes harder to estimate the age, though generally speaking, the smoother the skull, the older the body.
Weight is also easy to approximate, but hard to figure out precisely; you can find it out just by analyzing the tear of some bones. When it comes to figuring out the race, the nose is most important for forensic anthropology. Caucasian nose holes are triangular, Negroid's square, and Mongoloid's diamond-shaped.
